September 17th, Constitution Day

Today is Constitution Day, which marks the 221st anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution. The document is basically the rule book for how the federal government should operate. Although it has changed over the years (those changes are called amendments), the words written by the country's earliest leaders, sometimes called the Framers, are still in effect today.

Ride to Alta Sierra

I took a ride around Kern County today with my brother Don. We met at Bakersfield Harley Davidson. We took Highway 155 East through Glenville to Greenhorn Summit. Greenhorn Summit has a elevation of 6102 feet.Just past the summit is a little community of Alta Sierra where we had lunch at the Greenhorn Grill.I had a Hamburger with sauteed mushrooms and grilled onions, side order of onion rings and a couple glasses of iced tea for under $12.50. This is a fairly new eating establishment, but once it is found out it should be pretty busy with the week-end crowds.After lunch we headed down the hill into Wofford Heights. From a turnout just above the town I took this picture of Lake Isabella. This lake is fed by the Kern River.Three miles west of the Lake Isabella Dam is the Historic Town of Keyesville. From 1853 until 1870 Keyesville was the center of both Placer and Quartz Gold mining. The original Keys mine is still active.Still standing is the original General Store of Keyesville.

Twenty-nine years ago today I was married to the most wonderful woman. Thanks Debbie for the best twenty-nine years of my life and our two daughters.

Thanks also for all the long walks on the beach and late night deep conversations that we've had.
